Overview

KORAL is a land-based, transportable electronic-warfare system developed by Aselsan for the Turkish Armed Forces to support suppression of enemy air defenses and wider electromagnetic attack missions. Open sources describe it as a two-part system: a Radar Electronic Support element that detects and identifies emitters, and a Radar Electronic Attack element that jams or deceives hostile radar systems. The system is associated most closely with Turkish operations in Syria and Libya, where it was reported alongside Bayraktar TB2 and Anka-S uncrewed aircraft in campaigns against Russian-made and other air-defense systems.

Aselsan and Turkish sources present KORAL as part of a broader national push to turn electronic warfare into an operational enabler for drones, precision strike and integrated air defense. The base system entered Turkish service in 2016, while later KORAL 100, KORAL 200 / KORAL II and KORAL AD references denote a modernization and successor lineage rather than clearly separated public program baselines.

Development

KORAL traces to a Turkish "Land-Based Stand-off Jammer System" project contracted in 2009 by the Presidency of Defence Industries' predecessor organization, with entry into service in 2016, according to RUSI. Radartutorial states that Aselsan handed KORAL to the Turkish Air Force in February 2016 and identifies the system as a land-based radar electronic-warfare complex composed of separate support and attack vehicles.

The system emerged during a period in which Turkiye was building a more autonomous defense-electronics base around Aselsan, its largest domestic defense contractor. Wikipedia summarizes KORAL's stated mission as jamming and deceiving hostile radars, and notes its role in building information dominance and supporting rapid response in contested environments.

Modernization has continued under several public labels. In 2020, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said a more advanced follow-on generation, described as Kara SOJ-2, was under development, as reported by RUSI. Aselsan later completed a KORAL 100 modernization for the Turkish Armed Forces, adding broader frequency coverage, higher output power and advanced AESA beam steering, according to Defence Industry Europe.

At IDEF 2025, Aselsan presented KORAL 200 as a next-generation mobile radar EW system with modular electronic-support and electronic-attack components that can operate separately or in a networked configuration, according to Defense One sponsor content. In later company messaging, Aselsan also introduced KORAL AD as an anti-access / area-denial variant intended to detect, deceive and jam aircraft radars, according to Aselsan. Open sources do not establish which names are formal service designations, export names or press shorthand for successive modernization stages.
