Overview

The M982 Excalibur is a family of guided 155 mm artillery projectiles jointly developed by Raytheon and BAE Systems. It converts compatible conventional and self-propelled howitzers into precision-strike platforms without requiring a dedicated missile launcher. The projectile uses satellite and inertial navigation to correct its trajectory after firing, producing a reported circular error probable of approximately 5 metres under suitable conditions.

Excalibur has been fired from US and allied artillery systems, including the M777 towed howitzer and the Krab, Caesar and Archer self-propelled guns employed by Ukraine. Its combination of precision, extended range and compatibility with established 155 mm fleets made it suitable for attacking point targets while reducing the number of rounds required compared with unguided artillery.

The war in Ukraine also established Excalibur as a prominent case study in the limits of satellite-dependent precision weapons. Secondary reporting on Ukrainian evaluations describes a steep decline in effectiveness after Russian forces expanded GPS jamming, although neither the United States nor Ukraine has published an official hit-rate figure. The experience does not negate the projectile's accuracy in permissive electromagnetic conditions, but it makes resistance to electronic warfare central to assessments of its operational value.
