Overview

Marichka is a Ukrainian heavy autonomous or uncrewed underwater vehicle (AUV/UUV) developed during Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. It was first shown publicly in August 2023 by a volunteer engineering group reported as AMMO Ukraine, with Naval News describing the reveal as a break-cover moment for a new Ukrainian underwater drone project. Later public disclosures in February 2026 attributed updated specifications to Aquatechnik, a Ukrainian company developing several sea and river drone types for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to Militarnyi.

The system sits in Ukraine's broader wartime push into maritime uncrewed systems, but it differs from proven surface attack craft such as Magura V5: Marichka is submerged, slower, and publicly remains a prototype or test article rather than an established operational weapon. Public claims describe a 6 m-class vehicle with up to 1,000 km range and an approximately one-tonne explosive payload, but those figures remain developer claims relayed by defense media, not independently verified test data.

Development

Marichka was first publicly unveiled on 23 August 2023 through video and imagery of a black-painted underwater vehicle undergoing tests. H.I. Sutton's Covert Shores identified it as a large Ukrainian AUV probably born directly from wartime requirements and separate from the Toloka underwater-drone family. The early reporting associated the project with AMMO Ukraine, described in English-language coverage as a self-funded, donation-backed volunteer effort.

By February 2026, new details were being attributed to Aquatechnik rather than AMMO Ukraine. Militarnyi reported that the developers discussed Marichka on the "To Arms" podcast and stated that the vehicle was still being refined, particularly around navigation and propulsion. Public sources do not establish whether Aquatechnik is a continuation, rebrand, partner, or successor to the earlier AMMO Ukraine effort; the safest attribution is therefore "AMMO Ukraine / Aquatechnik-reported development" rather than a single unbroken corporate lineage.

The program has no publicly reported state procurement contract, serial-production order, or export customer. Its status as of the latest sourced disclosure is prototype testing, not combat fielding.
