A Soviet amphibious tracked carrier and artillery tractor that has become a ubiquitous transport, stand-in armoured personnel carrier and improvised weapons platform.

Overview

The MT-LB, an acronym translated as "multi-purpose towing vehicle, light armoured," is a low-slung Soviet tracked vehicle designed to tow artillery, carry ammunition and move personnel or cargo across difficult terrain. It was not conceived as a front-line infantry fighting vehicle: its standard armament is one 7.62 mm machine gun and its thin steel armour protects principally against small-arms fire and shell fragments. Its fully amphibious chassis, low ground pressure and capacity for 11 passengers nevertheless made it useful well beyond its original tractor role.

More than ~55,000 MT-LB and stretched MT-LBu-family vehicles were produced, according to figures collated by Wikipedia and Popular Mechanics. Production in Soviet Ukraine, Bulgaria and Poland created a broad operator base and a large inventory of hulls suitable for modification.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, both armies have employed the MT-LB as a troop carrier, ambulance, logistics vehicle and weapons platform. Its prominence reflects availability and adaptability rather than strong protection or firepower. Numerous conversions have paired the chassis with anti-aircraft guns, mortars, naval turrets, rocket launchers and heavier vehicle turrets, while Russian units have increasingly drawn old hulls from storage as losses reduced inventories of purpose-built infantry fighting vehicles.
