The smallest dart in the drone war — Nordic Air Defence is the Swedish startup betting that the cheapest way to kill a Shahed is a one-pound, single-propeller carbon-fibre interceptor that costs a few thousand dollars and is guided by software rather than expensive hardware. Its Kreuger-100XR is thrown like a dart or catapulted, loiters like a drone, then rams its target or detonates a small warhead against it. It is the most software-first, lowest-cost idea in Europe's affordable-interceptor wave — and the least proven: no combat record, still pre-production, its performance entirely a set of startup claims.

Overview

Nordic Air Defence (NAD) is a Stockholm defense-tech startup (founded March 2024) whose product, the Kreuger interceptor, is the smallest and cheapest entry in Europe's 2026 affordable-interceptor cohort. Its thesis, validated with physicists at Sweden's FOI defense-research agency, is to replace expensive interceptor hardware — costly sensors, seekers, propulsion — with control software and "intelligent aerodynamics," making each kill cheap enough to trade against a Shahed. The current lead product, the Kreuger-100XR, is a ~1-pound (0.45 kg), ~1-foot carbon-fibre, rocket-shaped interceptor with foldable wings and a single propeller, claiming ~354 km/h ("fastest in class"), a ~3.2 km intercept range, a camera-and-thermal seeker for autonomous fire-and-forget engagement, an optional ~250 g warhead, and 20-plus minutes of loiter — behaving more like an autonomous drone than a straight-shot missile, and launchable from a throw, a catapult, a vehicle pod, or (the company floats) an airborne platform. Founded by Acast co-founder Karl Rosander with a team drawn from Palantir, Kratos, Quantum Systems, Saab and FOI, NAD pitches European strategic autonomy — cheap air defense built off a China-minimized supply chain. It has raised ~$4.4 million (a large pre-seed for the sector), partnered with Volvo Defense (the VIPRO vehicle pod) and Poland's WB Group, and reached the finals of a Frontex counter-drone contest. The honest framing, which governs the entry: NAD is the most novel and least proven system in this cohort — no combat record, still pre-production, every specification a company claim, and even its signature "pulsed propulsion" never technically explained (the productized XR uses a conventional propeller).
