Overview
SwarmOS is the defense autonomy product of Palladyne AI, a Salt Lake City company listed on the Nasdaq as PDYN with roughly 160 employees. The company describes it as patented swarming and collaborative-autonomy software that turns drones, robots and sensors from multiple manufacturers into a self-organizing team supervised by a single operator. In a July 2026 contract announcement, Palladyne identified SwarmOS as the defense variant of its Palladyne Pilot embodied-AI flight software.
The system's public profile rests on a rapid mid-2026 sequence: a live run inside the US Army's Next-Generation Command and Control (NGC2) prototype during the 4th Infantry Division's Ivy Mass exercise in June 2026, a pair of Army validation contracts days later, and a $4.2 million Air Force Research Laboratory project extending the software toward satellites. All capability descriptions so far originate with the company; no independent performance evaluation has been published. SwarmOS also carries a hardware strategy: Palladyne holds exclusive US rights to IAI's Harpy and Harop loitering-munition line, which it plans to upgrade with the software.
Development
SwarmOS emerged from an unusual corporate lineage. Wikipedia traces the company to Sarcos Research Corporation, founded in 1983, later Raytheon's robotics division and, from 2021, the SPAC-listed exoskeleton maker Sarcos Technology and Robotics. After persistent financial trouble, a September 2023 four-year, $13.8 million Air Force Phase II SBIR contract for AI/ML software preceded a November 2023 board decision to abandon hardware and pivot to autonomy software. The company renamed itself Palladyne AI in March 2024 under returning CEO Ben Wolff, then built a defense arm in 2025 — Palladyne Defense — through acquisitions of GuideTech and two US precision-manufacturing firms.
The software's flight pedigree is recent. In February 2026 the company completed the first flight of IntelliSwarm, pairing SwarmOS with its NDAA-compliant BRAIN X2 flight computer on the Banshee loitering-munition platform (since renamed Gremlin-X) in autonomous collaboration with Red Cat drones — an integration the company says took three weeks. In January 2026, AFRL awarded the HANGTIME contract to extend SwarmOS across domains; Airforce Technology reported the effort began in July 2026 after the Army validation awards.
