PL-17

China's PL-17 is a very-long-range air-to-air missile designed to threaten tankers, airborne early-warning aircraft and other high-value support assets at distances approaching 400 km.

The PL-17, reporting name CH-AA-12 Auger, is a Chinese very-long-range air-to-air missile intended to threaten tankers, airborne early-warning aircraft and other high-value support assets.

Overview

The PL-17 is an outsized Chinese air-to-air missile developed for engagements beyond the practical reach of conventional medium- and long-range weapons. Its principal targets are large, operationally important aircraft such as aerial refuelling tankers, airborne early-warning platforms and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft. By threatening these enablers, the missile is intended to impose effects beyond the loss of an individual aircraft: tankers and command-and-control platforms may have to operate farther from contested airspace, reducing the reach, persistence and situational awareness of the combat aircraft that depend on them.

The missile is associated primarily with the People's Liberation Army Air Force's J-16 fighter. At approximately 6 m long, it is too large for the internal weapons bays of China's currently fielded stealth fighters and has only been conclusively photographed under the J-16. Its reported 400 km-class reach depends not only on propulsion but also on a lofted flight profile, mid-course updates and off-board targeting data. The International Institute for Strategic Studies assesses that the PL-17 supplements the smaller PL-15 rather than replacing it, giving Chinese fighter formations a specialized weapon for attacks on distant support aircraft.

Public information remains incomplete. China has disclosed neither the missile's prime contractor nor detailed performance data, and estimates of range, seeker configuration and compatible aircraft differ among external sources. Chinese state media reportedly declared the weapon in service in October 2022, while subsequent IISS assessments described fielding as beginning around 2023–24. There is no documented combat use or independently verified maximum-range live firing.
