Overview
The R-37M is a Russian very-long-range air-to-air missile developed through the Vympel design lineage and carried principally by the MiG-31BM interceptor. It is also associated with the Su-30, Su-35 and Su-57 families. Rosoboronexport markets an export version as the RVV-BD, for which the published maximum launch range is 200 km. Russian claims for the domestic weapon extend to 300-400 km under favorable launch conditions, but its true operational envelope is not publicly established.
The missile's reach cannot be separated from its launch platform. A MiG-31BM flying high and at supersonic speed imparts substantially more initial energy than a fighter launching from lower altitude or speed. Consequently, quoted maximum ranges are not interchangeable across aircraft or engagement conditions. They also describe an outer kinematic boundary rather than the distance at which a maneuvering target cannot evade the missile.
In the Russo-Ukrainian war, the R-37M has become significant primarily as an air-denial weapon. Its reported reach allows Russian interceptors to patrol behind their own lines while compelling Ukrainian aircraft to fly lower, reduce exposure times and modify attack profiles. Specific Russian claims of long-range kills remain unconfirmed independently, but the missile's suppressive effect has helped restore very-long-range air combat as a priority for Western planners.
