RIM-162 ESSM

The RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile is a medium-range, ship-launched surface-to-air missile that provides the self-defence and local-area air-defence layer aboard Western warships.

Overview

The RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) is a Raytheon-developed naval surface-to-air missile descended from the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow but redesigned with a larger rocket motor and a tail-controlled airframe. It occupies the defensive layer between close-in weapons and longer-range Standard Missiles, engaging air threats that penetrate or pass below a ship's outer defensive envelope. The Naval Technology profile describes ESSM as an international naval air-defence program intended to counter increasingly capable anti-ship threats.

ESSM's defining feature is magazine density. Four missiles can be quad-packed into one Mk 41 vertical launching system cell, allowing a ship to carry substantially more medium-range interceptors without adding launcher cells or increasing hull size. The missile can also operate from the Mk 29 launcher and other compatible launching systems, as summarized by Defense Industry Daily. Block 2 adds an active radar seeker to the earlier semi-active guidance mode, reducing dependence on continuous target illumination and increasing the ship's capacity to manage concurrent threats.
