SBU says 13 drones struck an FSB coordination center in occupied Kherson

A Russian security-service base ringed by checkpoints, guards and underground shelters was hit by 13 drones, the SBU said, showing what rear-area hardening now buys against Ukraine's mid-range strike fleet.

Special forces from the SBU's Alpha Special Operations Center struck a Russian Federal Security Service coordination center and basing point in occupied Kherson Oblast, the Kyiv Independent wrote on July 20, citing the security service. Thirteen drones hit the site and set off a large fire.

The center sat inside a boarding house in the occupied part of the region. Around 100 Russian service members may have been present, per the SBU's preliminary assessment. More than 70 vehicles stood on the grounds. Checkpoints controlled access, armed guards worked the site, and engineering barriers and underground shelters ringed the base, according to the agency statement carried by Ukrinform and Ukrainska Pravda.

The SBU did not disclose casualties, the precise location, or when the strike took place. Russia has not commented publicly, and the Kyiv Independent said it could not independently verify the account.

The strike sits inside a wider operation. Unmanned Systems Forces commander Robert "Madyar" Brovdi announced systematic attacks on July 6 aimed at cutting occupied Crimea off from mainland Russia, what he called "logistics lockdown," Kyiv Post detailed. SBU and HUR operators fly the mid-range missions across Crimea, southern occupied Ukraine and the Azov and Black seas, at ranges of 50 to 300 km. USF statements put at least 1,500 drones in the air daily from those units, with the pusher-prop FP-2 carrying most of the explosive weight.

Occupied Kherson Oblast forms a section of Russia's land corridor to Crimea and holds command facilities and supply routes for Russian forces in the south, the Kyiv Independent noted. The protection package at the FSB site, guards, checkpoints, barriers and shelters, is built against ground raids and indirect fire. It did not stop 13 airframes drawn from a fleet that costs a fraction of what it targets.

Two weeks into the campaign, USF estimates carried by Kyiv Post put shipping between Russia and Crimea at 30 percent of June volumes, with 75 percent of the ferries servicing the peninsula sunk or inoperable. The SBU said strikes of this kind force Russia to redeploy forces to guard its own facilities, which the agency counts as part of the return.
