Overview

The SC-19 is the US intelligence designation for the Chinese direct-ascent anti-satellite missile used on 11 January 2007 to destroy the defunct Fengyun-1C weather satellite. It is commonly associated with the name DN-1 and with two later systems described in US reporting as DN-2 and DN-3. These labels should be treated cautiously: the Secure World Foundation notes that the DN designations appear publicly through reports citing anonymous US officials rather than confirmed Chinese nomenclature.

Open-source assessments describe the SC-19 as a derivative of the DF-21C ballistic missile that incorporates technology from the HQ-19 missile-defense program. Its kinetic intercept vehicle destroys a target through direct collision rather than an explosive warhead. The 2007 engagement demonstrated an intercept at 865 km altitude, placing much of low Earth orbit within the system's potential reach.

Later launches indicate that China has continued developing related exo-atmospheric interceptors. DN-2 is associated with a 2013 high-altitude flight that may have reached an apogee of at least 30,000 km, while DN-3, also called KO09 in US intelligence reporting, is generally assessed as a midcourse ballistic-missile-defense interceptor with an inherent anti-satellite capability. US intelligence assessments have described a Chinese ground-based anti-satellite missile as operational, although independent open-source confirmation of deployed units, launcher numbers and missile inventories remains unavailable.
