Overview
Scorpius is a family of electronic-support and electronic-countermeasures systems developed by Israel Aerospace Industries' Elta Systems subsidiary. It is not a single jammer but a common architecture applied to ground-based area defense, shipboard protection, airborne escort and standoff jamming, individual aircraft self-protection, and training-range threat emulation. IAI identifies the core family as ELL-8256SB and describes it as an Active Electronically Scanned Array system that can form multiple focused jamming beams at once rather than steering a single antenna sequentially from target to target, according to the company's Scorpius-G product page.
The system's public profile rests heavily on manufacturer statements. IAI unveiled the family in November 2021 and presented it as a major step in exportable electronic warfare, while trade coverage in The War Zone and Defense News emphasized the same core claim: AESA arrays allow Scorpius to search a wide sector and apply separate, narrow jamming effects against multiple threats simultaneously. Quantitative performance data, customer identities, unit counts, jamming ranges and effective radiated power are not publicly established.
Development
IAI announced Scorpius publicly on 11 November 2021, with Israeli and international reporting describing it as a new electronic-warfare family from Elta rather than a one-off pod or ground station. The Jerusalem Post reported the unveiling as part of IAI's push into defensive electronic-warfare systems, while Defense News quoted Elta executives saying the system had already been sold to customers but did not identify the countries.
The design lineage combines Elta's radar and electronic-warfare work with gallium-nitride AESA technology and software-defined mission files. IAI framed the system at launch as an answer to a denser electromagnetic battlespace: aircraft, missiles, drones and air-defense radars operating across more frequencies and attack axes. In Forbes, the system was described through the manufacturer's assertion that it could engage many threats without physically destroying them, making it a "soft-kill" complement to interceptors, guns or directed-energy systems.
Scorpius-T, the training variant, appeared publicly around Israel's Blue Flag 2021 exercise, where it was used as an electronic-threat emulator for multinational aircrew training. The Defense Post reported the system's launch shortly afterward, reflecting IAI's effort to present Scorpius as both an operational jammer family and a training/testing tool for air forces facing modern integrated air-defense threats.
