Shield AI's "AI pilot" — software that flies aircraft and drones with no remote pilot, no GPS and no datalink, and swarms them under one operator. It cued a strike on a Russian Buk deep in jammed territory, and in June 2026 won a US Air Force production contract for the drone-wingman program.

Overview
Hivemind is Shield AI's platform-agnostic mission-autonomy software — what the company calls an "AI pilot" that "assumes the role of a human pilot or operator," running as edge AI onboard the aircraft. Its defining trait is that it does not depend on the two things that make drone swarms brittle: a pre-programmed GPS route and a live network link. Communications, satellite navigation and operator input are used if available but not required, so Hivemind can fly, reroute around obstacles, run collaborative tactics with peer and crewed aircraft, and swarm in GPS- and comms-denied environments. It is the fourth software entry in the BattlePolicy Lexicon's Command & Software domain, alongside Delta, the Maven Smart System and Lattice — and arguably the purest embodiment of "AI as deterrence," because it is the layer that turns a cheap airframe into an autonomous combatant.
Development
Shield AI was founded in 2015 (by brothers Brandon and Ryan Tseng with Andrew Reiter; Gary Steele is now CEO) and put its first AI pilot into combat in 2018 aboard Nova quadcopters clearing buildings. The reinforcement-learning lineage that powers today's Hivemind came from Heron Systems, which Shield AI acquired in July 2021 — Heron's F-16 agent had won DARPA's AlphaDogfight Trials in August 2020, beating a human pilot 5-0, and that work fed into the DARPA ACE program and the AI-versus-human dogfights aboard the X-62A VISTA F-16 testbed in 2023-24. From there Hivemind became deliberately airframe-agnostic, designed as a swappable autonomy capability rather than a feature welded to one drone.
