Space-Based Interceptor (Golden Dome)
The Space-Based Interceptor program develops orbital kinetic interceptors for Golden Dome, with a planned constellation intended to engage missiles during boost, midcourse and glide phases.
A US Space Force development program for orbital kinetic interceptors intended to provide a missile-defense layer within Golden Dome.
Overview
The Space-Based Interceptor (SBI) program is the orbital interceptor component under development for Golden Dome for America. Space Systems Command describes a proliferated low Earth orbit constellation intended to engage missiles during boost, midcourse and glide phases. Its stated objective is to demonstrate a capability integrated into the Golden Dome architecture by 2028.
SBI is a competitive development program rather than a single selected weapon. The program office sits within Space Systems Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Companies are developing alternative approaches through prototype agreements, and the eventual constellation size, interceptor configuration and production supplier selection are not publicly established. The command's program announcement describes the program and its prototype agreements.
Orbital basing distinguishes SBI from missile defenses launched from land or ships. The intended contribution is an additional engagement layer, including interception during powered flight. That capability remains a development objective. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink reported flight-ready SBI hardware in September 2026, but his statement did not establish a launch or successful intercept, according to Breaking Defense.
Golden Dome's leadership has made production conditional on affordability and scalability. Gen. Michael Guetlein said in April 2026 that space-based boost-phase interception would not enter production if it failed those tests, as recorded by Air & Space Forces.
