A mass-produced Chinese light corvette family built for coastal patrol, escort and anti-submarine warfare, with derivatives serving foreign navies and China's coast guard.

Overview

The Type 056, assigned the NATO reporting name Jiangdao, is a Chinese light corvette developed for operations in coastal waters and exclusive economic zones. The class gave the People's Liberation Army Navy a relatively inexpensive platform for routine patrol, escort and local surface warfare, while the Type 056A added the sonar equipment needed for anti-submarine operations. Its limited endurance and lack of a helicopter hangar distinguish it from larger frigates intended for sustained blue-water deployment.

China constructed the class at unusual scale and speed. Publicly available counts indicate approximately 22 baseline Type 056 ships and 50 Type 056A ships, or about 72 PLAN hulls in total, although the exact Chinese production figure remains an external estimate because official reporting of commissionings became less transparent after 2018. Naval News recorded the launch of the 60th hull in May 2019, roughly seven years after construction began.

The PLAN subsequently transferred all 22 baseline ships to the China Coast Guard after removing major missile and torpedo armament. The better-equipped Type 056A remained in naval service. Export derivatives entered service with Bangladesh and Nigeria, while China granted two ships to Cambodia under a bilateral cooperation program.
