Type F127 frigate

Germany's planned next-generation air-defence frigate, intended to replace the Sachsen class and add a mobile sea-based ballistic-missile-defence layer to NATO's integrated air defence.

Overview

The Type F127 is a German Navy procurement programme for a new class of air-defence frigates intended to replace the three Type F124 Sachsen-class ships as they retire in the mid-2030s. Germany formally approved the programme in December 2024, but no construction contract has been awarded, no ship has been laid down and the final class size remains unsettled.

The design is based on TKMS's MEKO A-400 AMD concept and is being developed for fleet air defence and ballistic-missile defence. TKMS states that the ship is intended to intercept ballistic missiles beyond Earth's atmosphere, a capability that would make the F127 Europe's first surface combatant designed for an exo-atmospheric interception role. That remains a design objective rather than an operational capability: the interceptor, radar and combat-system selections have not been publicly confirmed.

Beyond protecting naval formations, the F127 is conceived as a mobile contribution to NATO's integrated air-defence network. Unlike a fixed land site, a ship could reposition its sensors and interceptors as the defended area or threat axis changes. Programme concepts have generally called for six ships, while later trade reporting suggested that Germany could seek as many as eight. The number, cost and delivery schedule will remain provisional until Germany awards a construction contract.
