Overview
CORTEX is a battle-management and swarm-command software system announced on 1 June 2026 by Israel's UVision, the manufacturer of the Hero-120 and the wider Hero family of loitering munitions. The company describes it as an "active Battle Intelligence and Mission Management system" — a software-driven framework that connects sensors, decision-making processes and multiple effectors into one battlefield ecosystem, with the stated aims of shortening the sensor-to-shooter cycle, reducing operator cognitive load and coordinating engagements across air, land and maritime domains. Its response layer manages the deployment of UVision's own munition families: the fixed-wing Hero series, the encapsulated Viper systems acquired with SpearUAV, and Peregrine, which the company describes as designed for tactical kinetic operations.
The system marks a deliberate move by a munitions manufacturer up the value chain into the command layer. As Defence Blog framed the launch, the operational problem CORTEX targets is operator saturation: a human manually controlling one loitering munition can handle only a few parallel actions, so automating the lower-level coordination is what lets a small team manage multiple simultaneous strikes. CORTEX is young and thinly documented — no customers, contracts or combat use have been disclosed, and its capability claims rest on UVision's own statements.
Development
CORTEX is the productized form of a concept UVision had been building publicly for about a year. In September 2025 the company unveiled an AI-powered Common Operating System (COS) to unify heterogeneous loitering munitions — pairing its fixed-wing Hero family with SpearUAV's rotary-wing Viper — under a single AI-driven control layer, as reported by the Jerusalem Post. The corporate structure followed the software: UVision had acquired Trim Robotics in April 2025 to deepen its autonomy capabilities, and on 26 November 2025 completed the full acquisition of SpearUAV, whose encapsulated Viper family covers lower tactical echelons — including launch from ground vehicles, naval vessels and submarines — according to European Security & Defence and CTech. UVision had held a strategic investment in SpearUAV for roughly four years before the buyout.
The finished system was announced on 1 June 2026, ahead of its exhibition at the ILA Berlin air show (10–14 June 2026). "The future battlefield will be defined by speed, scale, and connectivity across multiple domains," UVision Air chief executive Ran Gozali said in the launch release, positioning CORTEX as the layer that unifies command, control and mission execution as forces field growing numbers of autonomous systems.
