Zolfaghar
Iran's road-mobile, solid-fuel Zolfaghar ballistic missile extends the Fateh-110 family to a claimed 700 km and has been used in cross-border strikes since 2017.
An Iranian road-mobile, solid-propellant short-range ballistic missile that extends the Fateh-110 family to a claimed 700 km and forms part of the precision-strike core of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force.
Overview
The Zolfaghar, also transliterated Zulfiqar and named for the sword associated with Ali, is a single-stage Iranian ballistic missile operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force. It belongs to the Fateh-110 family and is generally assessed as a development of the Fateh-313. The missile combines a solid-propellant motor, road-mobile launcher and separating warhead with a claimed range of 700 km, giving Iran reach across Iraq and much of the Gulf without relying on the longer launch preparation associated with liquid-fuel systems.
The Zolfaghar occupies an intermediate position in Iran's solid-fuel missile lineage: it has greater reach than early Fateh variants but is shorter-ranged than the subsequent Dezful and Haj Qasem derivatives. Iran Watch describes the wider Fateh family as a central component of Iran's precision conventional-strike force, although the Zolfaghar's true accuracy, inventory and production rate remain uncertain. Unlike several newer Iranian missiles, it has an extensive operational record beginning with strikes in Syria in 2017.
