BTR-4 Bucephalus

Overview

The BTR-4 Bucephalus is a Ukrainian amphibious 8x8 armored vehicle designed by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KhKBM). Ukrainian and defense-industry sources generally describe it as an armored personnel carrier, while its turret armament and ability to fight alongside dismounted infantry also place it within the infantry fighting vehicle category. Unlike the Soviet BTR-60, BTR-70 and BTR-80 lineage, the BTR-4 uses a front crew compartment, mid-mounted engine and rear troop compartment with rear exits, a layout compared with the German TPz Fuchs by the BTR-4 technical overview.

The principal Ukrainian service model is the BTR-4E, commonly fitted with the BM-7 Parus remotely operated combat module. Its combination of a 30 mm cannon, automatic grenade launcher, machine gun and anti-tank guided missiles gives it substantially more organic firepower than a basic troop carrier. Amphibious propulsion, high road speed and multiple command, reconnaissance, recovery and medical variants support broader mechanized-unit employment.

The BTR-4 has served in Ukraine since 2009 and in combat since 2014. It has also been exported or transferred to Iraq, Nigeria and Indonesia, while Myanmar has displayed a locally produced derivative. Export quality disputes affected its reputation, but wartime production has made the platform strategically important to Ukraine: KhKBM claimed in September 2026 that it had produced more than 600 vehicles since the full-scale Russian invasion despite relocating from Kharkiv, according to Defence Blog.
