Carl-Gustaf M4

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is Saab's fourth-generation 84 mm reusable recoilless rifle, a man-portable infantry weapon able to fire anti-armour, anti-structure, anti-personnel, smoke and illumination ammunition.

Overview

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is the current model of a Swedish reusable recoilless-rifle family first fielded in 1948. Unlike a single-purpose guided anti-tank missile or disposable launcher, it serves as a multi-role infantry support weapon: crews select from an established family of 84 mm rounds according to the target and mission. Saab describes the M4 as approximately 7 kg in weight, less than 1 m long and compatible with legacy Carl-Gustaf ammunition as well as programmable rounds and modern fire-control devices.

The M4 retains the Carl-Gustaf family's reusable launcher while reducing the weight and length carried by its crew. Its ammunition portfolio includes high-explosive anti-tank, high-explosive, anti-structure, airburst, anti-personnel, smoke and illumination rounds. This breadth places it between disposable weapons such as the AT4 and more expensive guided systems such as NLAW and Javelin. Saab says the wider Carl-Gustaf system has been sold to more than 40 countries, while its current product material identifies 24 M4 customers.
