Kronshtadt Sirius

Kronshtadt Sirius, also called Inokhodets-RU, is Russia's larger twin-engine successor to Orion: a MALE reconnaissance-strike UAV with claimed SATCOM control, 450 kg payload and an uncertain path from prototype to service.

Overview

Kronshtadt Sirius, also designated Inokhodets-RU, is a Russian twin-engine medium-altitude long-endurance uncrewed combat air vehicle developed by the Kronshtadt Group. It is the larger sibling of Orion (Inokhodets), with a heavier airframe, higher claimed payload and an intended role set spanning armed reconnaissance, strike, maritime patrol and relay missions. The dedicated Sirius profile describes the system as a further development of Orion and lists the Russian Aerospace Forces as the primary user, while still marking the aircraft's status as "in development" rather than mature service Wikipedia — Kronshtadt Sirius.

The program is important less because of confirmed battlefield output than because it shows what Russia has been trying to build: a sovereign MALE UCAV class closer to Western and Turkish armed drones than the smaller Orion. Public evidence remains thin. Sirius has flown, has been associated with state-defense-order deliveries and is tied to the new Dubna production site, but no public reporting documents combat sorties by the type.

Development

Sirius emerged from Kronshtadt's Orion line. A full-scale mock-up of Inokhodets-RU/Sirius was first shown at MAKS-2019, and the Orion variants record describes it as an upgraded Orion design whose key distinction is twin engines Wikipedia — Kronshtadt Orion. On 24 August 2021, the Russian Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Kronshtadt for five combat groups of the upgraded Orion variant, Inokhodets-RU/Sirius, with deliveries originally scheduled for 2023 Wikipedia — Kronshtadt Orion.

Prototype assembly began in November 2021, and the Russian Ministry of Defence announced in January 2022 that serial deliveries of Sirius strike UAVs would begin in 2023 Wikipedia — Kronshtadt Sirius. Public first-flight reporting is inconsistent: the dedicated Sirius article cites an August 2023 first flight, while a leaked Pentagon assessment reported by Popular Mechanics placed first flight on 27 February 2023 Popular Mechanics. Defense Express separately reported a publicly videoed flight around 1 June 2023, treating it as the first visible evidence of the type in the air Defense Express.

Production is associated with Kronshtadt's new Dubna facility in Moscow Oblast, built in 2021-2022 at a reported cost exceeding $53 million for Orion and Sirius manufacture Defense Express — factory strike. Eurasian Times reported in December 2023 that Kronshtadt had announced early completion of state-defense-order deliveries for an unnamed drone type; the outlet inferred this may have referred to Sirius, but that identification has not been publicly confirmed Eurasian Times.
