South Korea's domestically developed upper-layer air and ballistic-missile defence system, designed to operate above Cheongung-II and Patriot in the country's layered shield.

Overview

L-SAM is a Republic of Korea long-range surface-to-air and ballistic-missile defence system intended to form the upper layer of the country's ground-based air-defence architecture. It is designed to complement lower-tier Cheongung-II/M-SAM-II and Patriot batteries. The national Agency for Defense Development led the development effort, while Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems hold major production contracts covering launchers, anti-ballistic interceptors and the multifunction radar, according to DAPA and Hanwha Aerospace.

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration approved production after completion of development and successful interception testing. The January 2025 acquisition decision assigned about KRW 1.7302 trillion to the 2025-30 production program. Publicly released material does not establish a unit price, delivered battery count or operational-service date. L-SAM therefore remains a production-stage system rather than a demonstrated operational or combat-proven capability.
