Overview

The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System is a tracked rocket-artillery launcher developed in the United States and fielded from 1983. Its defining feature is a two-pod launcher: twice the ready pod capacity of the wheeled M142 HIMARS. Depending on the loaded munition, an M270 can support battlefield fire missions or longer-range precision strike; its effective weapon range therefore cannot be expressed as a single fixed launcher figure.

The system combines an armored crew compartment and tracked cross-country mobility with a larger ready ammunition load than HIMARS. Those characteristics impose corresponding costs in road speed, transportability and tracked-vehicle sustainment. The modernized M270A2 is intended to retain the basic launcher concept while introducing updated fire control, automotive components and crew protection. Lockheed Martin describes the current launcher as compatible with GMLRS, extended-range GMLRS, ATACMS and Precision Strike Missile family loads.

Development

The M270 entered service in 1983 as a tracked launcher designed around sealed, interchangeable rocket pods. Its tracked chassis and two-pod capacity differentiated it from later lightweight wheeled launchers while allowing a common family of compatible munitions to evolve without replacing the complete vehicle. Modernization produced successive A0, A1 and A2 configurations rather than a wholly new launcher. The A2 program adds the Common Fire Control System, a new engine and transmission, and an Improved Armored Cab. These changes address compatibility with newer munitions, automotive supportability and crew protection while preserving the M270's two-pod architecture. The continuing upgrade effort is also visible in the US depot system: Red River Army Depot reported delivery of its first upgraded launchers to the United Kingdom.
