Mistral

Overview

Mistral is a family of French infrared-homing very-short-range air-defense missiles produced by MBDA France. The basic ground firing post is a two-person, tripod-mounted system rather than a conventional shoulder-fired weapon, while the same missile family equips vehicle turrets, remotely operated naval mounts and helicopter air-to-air launchers. The current Mistral 3 is a fire-and-forget weapon with an imaging-infrared seeker and a manufacturer-stated maximum engagement range of 8 km.

The family entered French service with Mistral 1 in 1990 and has subsequently expanded into a broad multiplatform ecosystem. According to the system's operator and variant record, Mistral has served with 37 armed forces across 25 countries. Its target set has also widened beyond fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters: MBDA markets Mistral 3 against unmanned aircraft, cruise missiles and fast inshore attack craft.

Demand increased after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. European governments established a pooled acquisition covering at least 1,500 Mistral 3 missiles, while MBDA expanded production and delivered the 2,000th missile of the Mistral 3 generation in 2025. The system consequently occupies two overlapping roles: a national point-defense weapon and a candidate common interceptor for European short-range air-defense networks.
