Rheinmetall's clean-sheet main battle tank — the Panther KF51 — is Germany's most radical armour concept in decades: a tank built around a 130mm autoloaded gun that the maker says reaches 50% farther than the Leopard 2's 120mm, a slimmed three-person turret crew, integrated loitering munitions, and a full active-protection suite. Unveiled in 2022, it is a private-venture bet by Rheinmetall to leapfrog the Leopard 2 and seize the next-generation tank market while the official Franco-German MGCS program crawls — and Hungary has signed on as launch partner.

Overview

The Panther KF51 (Kettenfahrzeug 51) is a next-generation MBT developed by Rheinmetall as a private venture, first shown at the Eurosatory 2022 defence exhibition. Its headline feature is firepower: a 130mm Rh 130 L/52 smoothbore cannon with a bustle autoloader, which Rheinmetall says delivers roughly 50% greater kill range than the standard 120mm gun, firing APFSDS, HEAT and programmable airburst ammunition. The design pairs that gun with a digitized, networked architecture, integrated loitering munitions for over-the-horizon strike, an active-protection system, and a reduced crew of three (with provision for a fourth "mission crew" station to operate drones or effectors). It is lighter than many Western peers at around 59 tonnes, and is explicitly pitched as the tank to succeed the ubiquitous Leopard 2 — initially via export and partner production rather than a confirmed Bundeswehr buy.
