Overview
The Parodiya ("Parody") is a Russian decoy unmanned aircraft designed for a single purpose: to appear on radar as something far more dangerous than it is. It carries no explosive payload. Its operative component is a Luneburg lens — a dielectric sphere with a radially graded refractive index that retroreflects incoming radar energy back toward its source, multiplying the apparent radar cross-section of a small, cheap airframe until it resembles a Shahed-136 or Geran-type strike drone.
Ukraine's Defence Intelligence describes it as smaller and cheaper than a Geran while presenting a comparable radar signature. It is distinct from the Gerbera, the other Russian cheap-drone line, in both airframe and function: the Gerbera is a delta-wing multi-role platform that mimics a Shahed by physical resemblance and can be armed, scout or relay, while the Parodiya is a high-wing aircraft that is a decoy and nothing else, achieving its deception electronically rather than geometrically.
Since 2025 it has been a fixture of Russian strike packages, named separately from Shahed and Gerbera drones in nearly every Ukrainian Air Force nightly tally.
Development
The Parodiya emerged as Russia industrialised deception alongside strike. By late 2024 Ukrainian intelligence assessed that roughly half of the drones in Russian night packages were unarmed decoys, and Russian sources referred to a deliberate deception effort under the name "Operation False Target." The Gerbera was the first mass decoy; the Parodiya followed as a specialised complement.
Ukraine's Defence Intelligence published details of the type in May 2025, confirming that the drones carry no warheads, are smaller and cheaper than Geran drones, and use a Luneburg lens to present a Geran-like radar return. DIU also noted that Russia sources components for the Parodiya from multiple countries, predominantly Chinese and Western commercial electronics — the same import-dependent pattern documented across the Gerbera and Geran families.
The design choice is economically precise. A Gerbera achieves partial radar mimicry through size and shape, which costs airframe. A Luneburg lens achieves it through physics, which costs a sphere. Reporting indicates the lens fitted can be configured to present an effective radar cross-section from about 1 m² to more than 10 m², so one airframe can be set to imitate a range of threat signatures — a small drone on one sortie, a cruise missile on another.
Design & capabilities
Public technical detail is thinner than for the Gerbera, and the type is defined by one component.
- Airframe: a high-wing configuration — the clearest visual distinction from the delta-wing Gerbera and Shahed families — built from plywood and foam, deliberately cheap and disposable.
- Payload: none. No warhead, no explosive, no strike capability of any kind. This is not a variant characteristic; it is the definition of the type.
- Luneburg lens: a dielectric sphere with a radially graded refractive index. Radar energy entering the sphere is bent so that it focuses and reflects back along the incoming path, producing a strong return from a small object. Reported as adjustable across an effective radar cross-section from roughly 1 m² to over 10 m².
- Electronics: primarily Chinese and Western commercial components, per Ukrainian intelligence — navigation and flight control sufficient to fly a pre-programmed route.
- Range: not established in public reporting. Assessments describe it as extending to hundreds of kilometres, consistent with its role of accompanying Geran-class drones into Ukrainian airspace.
- Cost: not disclosed, but assessed by DIU as cheaper than a Geran and generally understood to sit at or below the Gerbera's roughly $10,000.
The tactical effect follows directly from the physics. A ground radar operator sees a track with a Shahed-sized return, on a Shahed-like heading, inside a package containing genuine Shaheds. There is no way to classify it as harmless before engaging it, so it consumes an interceptor decision, a missile or gun engagement, or an interceptor-drone sortie — all of which cost more than the decoy.
Variants
No Parodiya variants have been publicly identified. The type appears to be a single-purpose design, and the adjustability that would otherwise produce variants is built into the lens itself: the same airframe can be configured to present different radar cross-sections rather than requiring different builds.
This contrasts sharply with the Gerbera, which has proliferated into decoy, kamikaze, reconnaissance, electronic-intelligence, signal-relay and enlarged Gerbera-2 configurations — three of which are named as separate lines in Russian production planning.
Combat record / operational use
The Parodiya is not used independently. It flies as a component of mixed strike packages that also carry piston Geran-2, jet Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones, Garpiya-A1 airframes and Gerbera decoys, and its presence is recorded in the standard formula Ukrainian Air Force reporting uses: "Shahed attack drones, Gerbera drones and Parodiya decoy UAVs."
That formula appears through 2026 in essentially every significant attack report — 136 drones on the night of 3–4 August 2026, 147 on 17–18 August, 135 on 20–21 August, 121 on 30–31 August. Launch points named in the same reporting include Oryol, Millerovo, occupied Donetsk Oblast and Crimea.
Its operational effect is measured in what defenders spend rather than in what it destroys. Analysis of the Gulf air-defence problem in War on the Rocks noted that through 2025 and early 2026 Ukraine faced increasing numbers of Gerbera and Parodiya decoys fitted with Luneburg lenses, flown alongside missiles and armed drones specifically to overwhelm and confuse defences and to draw anti-aircraft fire away from the genuine threats.
The counter-adaptation runs in the same direction as everything else in this war: toward cheaper interception. A decoy is only a successful weapon if the defender spends more on the engagement than the attacker spent on the airframe, so every reduction in Ukrainian intercept cost — from missiles to guns to $1,000-class interceptor drones — erodes the Parodiya's value proposition.
Advantages
- Extreme cost asymmetry — a warhead-less plywood airframe with a passive lens obliges an engagement decision that may cost a missile worth hundreds of times more.
- Physics-based deception — the Luneburg lens produces a genuine radar return rather than an approximation, so it cannot be filtered out by signature analysis the way a shape mismatch might be.
- Adjustable signature — configurable from roughly 1 m² to over 10 m² RCS, letting one airframe imitate different threat classes.
- Cheaper than the Gerbera — no warhead, no camera, no modem, no relay hardware; the minimum viable decoy.
- Passive — the lens radiates nothing and requires no power, so there is no emission to detect or jam.
- Inflates apparent raid size — every Parodiya in a package makes the attack look larger and forces defensive dispersion across more tracks.
- Simple to build — plywood, foam, commercial electronics and a sphere.
Drawbacks / limitations
- Zero destructive capability — it cannot damage anything. Its entire value is contingent on the defender choosing to engage it.
- Value collapses against cheap interception — if Ukraine can engage a track for $1,000, the exchange no longer favours the attacker.
- Slow and fragile — a plywood high-wing aircraft is trivially destroyed once identified and engaged.
- Visually distinguishable — the high-wing planform does not resemble a Shahed to the eye, so the deception fails against electro-optical identification and interceptor-drone camera feeds.
- Import-dependent — Chinese and Western commercial electronics make it sanctions-exposed, exactly like the Gerbera.
- Poorly documented — no confirmed manufacturer, no published dimensions, weight, range or production figures.
- A finite trick — as Ukrainian radar operators and fire-control software accumulate data on Luneburg-lens returns, discrimination will improve.
Counterparts
- Gerbera (Russia) — the other Russian cheap-drone line; multi-role, armable, delta-winged, and mimicking by shape rather than by lens.

Outlook
The Parodiya's future depends entirely on an arithmetic problem it does not control. Decoys work when interception is expensive. Ukraine's counter-drone effort has been driving intercept cost down for three years — from Patriot and NASAMS missiles to Gepard and Skynex gun rounds to $1,000-class interceptor drones — and each step erodes the decoy's return. If Ukraine can reliably kill a Parodiya with a cheap interceptor drone, Russia is spending airframes to destroy airframes at roughly parity, which is not deception, it is attrition.
The countervailing trend is the jet Geran. As Geran-4 and Geran-5 raise package speed to 350–600 km/h, the time available to classify a track before committing to an engagement shrinks, and decoys become more valuable precisely because discrimination gets harder. Russia's mixed packages — slow decoys, slow armed drones and fast jets in the same raid — are designed to exploit that: the defender must sort a heterogeneous stream under compressed time.
Two developments would matter. Confirmation that Ukrainian fire control can reliably discriminate a Luneburg-lens return from a genuine drone would end the type's usefulness quickly. Conversely, migration of the Luneburg approach onto the enlarged Gerbera-2 — combining a real 20–30 kg warhead with an inflated radar signature — would remove the decoy's fundamental weakness, since defenders could no longer hope that any given track is harmless.
