PT-91 Twardy

A Polish main battle tank derived from the T-72M1, adding ERAWA reactive armour, improved fire control and an uprated engine while retaining the Soviet-designed 125 mm gun, autoloader and running gear.

Overview

The PT-91 Twardy, whose Polish name means "Hard," is a main battle tank developed from Poland's licence-built T-72M1. It retains the T-72 family's compact three-person layout, 125 mm smoothbore gun, carousel autoloader, transmission architecture and running gear, but incorporates Polish ERAWA explosive reactive armour, a modernised fire-control system, laser warning equipment and an 850 hp diesel engine. The design entered Polish service in 1995 and became the country's principal indigenous post-Cold War tank upgrade.

Production for Poland combined newly manufactured vehicles with rebuilt T-72M and T-72M1 hulls. Public sources generally identify 232 tanks produced or converted for Poland between 1995 and 2002, although detailed breakdowns differ. Malaysia separately acquired 48 substantially modified PT-91M Pendekar tanks, while Poland transferred an officially undisclosed number of PT-91s to Ukraine beginning in July 2022.

The Twardy's operational value lies principally in improving the protection and fire-control performance of an available T-72-derived platform. Its shared 125 mm ammunition and broad mechanical commonality with Soviet-designed tanks simplify integration into forces already operating that equipment. Conversely, the unchanged hull geometry, ammunition arrangement and main gun preserve important limitations inherited from the original T-72 design.
