T-84 Oplot

A Ukrainian main battle tank family derived from the diesel-powered T-80UD, developed in Kharkiv around an autoloaded 125 mm gun, a 1,200 hp engine and progressively upgraded protection and sighting systems.

Overview

The T-84 Oplot is a Ukrainian main battle tank designed by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau and manufactured by the Malyshev Plant. It emerged from the Soviet T-80UD, retaining that tank's compact three-person layout, carousel autoloader and opposed-piston diesel architecture while introducing a Ukrainian welded turret, powerplant and protection systems. The family encompasses the original T-84, the T-84U Oplot, the substantially revised BM Oplot or Oplot-M, Thailand's Oplot-T export model and the NATO-calibre T-84-120 Yatagan prototype.

The Oplot is significant as an attempt to preserve an independent Ukrainian heavy-armour design and production base after the Soviet Union's dissolution. Its battlefield relevance is constrained by scale: Ukraine has operated only a handful, while Thailand became the sole volume export customer with 49 Oplot-T tanks. The United States also acquired four T-84s for testing and training. Although Ukraine announced an intention to order additional Oplots in 2023, the size, financing and implementation of any resulting program are not publicly established.
