Overview

The Arjun Mk-1A is an upgraded production variant of India's indigenous Arjun main battle tank. Designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and assigned for manufacture at Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, it incorporates dozens of changes over the earlier Arjun Mk 1. The package emphasizes protection, observation, night fighting, navigation and digital control rather than a fundamental redesign of the tank.

At a reported weight of approximately 68.5 tonnes, the Mk-1A is among the heaviest main battle tanks intended for Indian Army service. Its mass supports substantial protection and a large four-person fighting compartment, but also increases dependence on suitable bridges, railcars, transporters, recovery vehicles and maintenance infrastructure. The program's immediate significance therefore lies as much in India's ability to produce and sustain the tank as in its individual combat features.

Development

DRDO developed the Mk-1A from the Arjun Mk 1 after operational feedback and further trials. The upgrade incorporates 72 changes, according to the Indian Express account of the Mk-1A program, although public descriptions classify only a subset as major improvements.

The Ministry of Defence placed the production order in September 2021, establishing the Mk-1A as the next Arjun configuration intended for Indian Army service. Janes reported the order after earlier price negotiations for the production batch had been concluded. The program subsequently encountered delays associated with the availability of its German-origin MTU engines, and Janes reported that the engine issue was affecting the Mk-1A schedule.
