Saab 340 AEW&C (ASC 890)
The Saab 340 ASC 890 combines the PS-890 Erieye radar with onboard combat-control stations. Sweden donated its two aircraft to Ukraine, which confirmed combat operations beginning in March 2026.
The ASC 890 is Sweden’s combat-control configuration of the Saab 340 Erieye airborne early warning aircraft, transferred to Ukraine to support air surveillance and fighter coordination.
Overview
The Saab 340 AEW&C is a Swedish airborne early warning and control aircraft built around the Saab 340B regional turboprop and the PS-890 Erieye radar. ASC 890, short for Airborne Surveillance and Control 890, identifies the upgraded Swedish configuration, also designated S 100D Argus. Its fixed radar antenna sits above the fuselage in a long dorsal fairing. The War Zone’s system profile distinguishes this configuration from the earlier aircraft that transmitted radar information to controllers on the ground.
The ASC 890 combines surveillance with onboard fighter control. Its elevated radar can detect low-flying targets beyond the terrain-limited view of some ground radars, while mission operators help coordinate combat aircraft. Sweden donated its two ASC 890 aircraft to Ukraine; Poland and Thailand operate other Saab 340 Erieye configurations, according to the Saab 340 AEW&C reference history.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that the aircraft began combat missions in March 2026, as reported by Janes. Their contribution is a national airborne surveillance and control capability. Aircraft availability, radar coverage and integration with fighters determine how much of that capability Ukraine can sustain.
