Ukrainian drones strike Engels-2, Russia's strategic bomber base, 600 km behind the front

A reported fire at the home base of Russia's Tu-95 and Tu-160 fleets, and attack footage showing an unfamiliar V-tail airframe, put Ukraine's deep-strike campaign back on its highest-value target set.

Ukrainian drones struck Russia's Engels-2 air base in Saratov Oblast overnight into July 16, residents of Saratov and Engels describing waves of low-flying drones followed by explosions, the Kyiv Post reported, citing Russian monitoring channels and local media. The Russian outlet Astra said its analysis of footage published by the Exilenova+ channel confirmed a fire at the airfield. What burned there is not established.

Engels-2 sits roughly 600 kilometers from the front line and houses the 184th and the 121st Guards heavy bomber aviation regiments, according to the Kyiv Independent. The Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 aircraft flying from the base launch Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities. Moscow had not confirmed a strike on the base by morning, and Ukraine's military has not commented.

Damage claims diverge. Exilenova+ placed the fire, preliminarily, in the aircraft parking area, Defence Blog noted, while the Ukrainian outlet Militarnyi wrote that NASA's FIRMS satellite fire-detection system had logged no blaze at the base as of its latest check. Militarnyi also flagged an airframe in the attack footage with a straight wing and a V-tail, a design distinct from Ukraine's Liutyi one-way drones, and read it as a possible newer long-range type.

Saratov governor Roman Busargin said the attack damaged civilian infrastructure in Engels and caused no casualties, per Meduza; Astra identified a drone impact on an upper floor of the Ladya residential complex, two kilometers from the airfield. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses downed 375 drones overnight across 18 regions, annexed Crimea and the Azov and Black Seas.

The base has taken hits since December 2022, when a first drone strike reportedly damaged two Tu-95s. A January 2025 strike on the Kristall depot that fuels the base burned for five days, and a March 2025 attack destroyed an ammunition depot, a loss established weeks later through before-and-after satellite imagery. Hours after the Engels attack, Russian ballistic missiles killed two people and injured six in Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, the sixth attack of its kind on the capital this month, per TVP World.

The cost signal is already on the books in Saratov Oblast: a drone attack earlier this month halted the nearby Saratov oil refinery, per industry sources cited by Reuters. What this strike adds waits on the next satellite pass. The V-tail airframe in the footage is the detail worth watching.
