Background

Rheinmetall AG is an established, publicly traded defense and technology prime — founded in Düsseldorf in 1889 — and this directory's anchor incumbent, NOT a startup. It is Germany's largest defense contractor and one of Europe's biggest, spanning military vehicles (8x8 Boxer, Lynx KF41, the Panther KF51, and the Leopard 2 supply chain), weapons and ammunition (155mm and 120mm rounds, autocannons, tank guns), air defense (Skyranger, Skynex, the Gepard lineage), and military electronics, sensors and drones.

In 2025 it discontinued its legacy automotive-parts business to become a pure-play defense group, and pushed into naval (acquiring shipbuilder NVL) and space. Led by CEO Armin Papperger, it employed roughly 40,000 people in 2025 and has been a DAX component (Frankfurt/XETRA: RHM) since March 2023. Rheinmetall sits at the center of European rearmament and the Ukraine war economy — the industrial benchmark against which the newer startup cohort in this directory is measured: the incumbent that already operates at scale where startups are still promising it.

Financial footing Pro

  • Record order backlog of €63.8bn at end-2025 (up 36% YoY)
  • Key programs: Bundeswehr Leopard 2 A8 and 8x8 Boxer (incl. multi-billion UK/German orders), HX2 trucks, and Skyranger/Skynex air defense for European buyers
  • Nordic states (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) drove 2025 ammunition order intake
  • The 155mm ramp: Unterlüss plant (Lower Saxony) opened Sept 2025 (~€500m, Europe's largest), scaling to 350,000 rounds/yr by 2027
  • ~1.5m shells/yr network-wide targeted from 2027
  • Ukraine is the top customer of its Weapon & Ammunition division
  • CONFIRMED: Rheinmetall Ukrainian Defence Industry JV (Kyiv, operational — vehicle repair + Lynx)
  • ANNOUNCED / UNDER CONSTRUCTION: a 155mm ammunition plant inside Ukraine, production targeted for 2026 (not yet operational; delayed by bureaucracy)
  • Backers: Publicly listed with a high free float and no controlling shareholder; the German state holds no stake. Largest holders are institutional index investors — BlackRock ~7% (2025), Vanguard next — alongside substantial retail ownership. ~46.7 million shares outstanding.

Rheinmetall's numbers reflect a wartime demand surge. On a continuing-operations (defense-only) basis after its automotive parts unit was moved to discontinued operations, FY2025 sales rose 29% to €9.935bn (restated 2024: €7.715bn; total-group 2024 including automotive was ~€9.75bn). Operating result rose 33% to €1.841bn at an 18.5% margin, with a record order backlog of €63.8bn (up 36% from €46.9bn).

The dividend was lifted to €11.50/share from €8.10; management guides FY2026 sales to €14.0-14.5bn (up 40-45%) at ~19% margin — projected, not banked. The stock is a dramatic rerating story: from roughly €90 before Russia's February 2022 invasion to a record near €1,940 in mid-2025. It has since fallen hard — around €1,050-1,090 (market cap ~€49bn) by early July 2026, down about a third over twelve months — after Germany cancelled the F126 frigate program (an ~18.6% one-day drop) and markets cooled on the durability of European defense spending.

Further disclosed customers & programs (public reporting):

Rheinmetall's customer base is governments, not consumers: the German Bundeswehr (38% of 2025 sales came from Germany, up from 34%), NATO and allied European states, and Ukraine. Germany's post-2022 special fund and rising NATO budgets drive vehicle and ammunition orders — Leopard 2 A8, 8x8 Boxer (including large UK and German contracts), HX2 trucks, and Skyranger/Skynex air defense for European buyers.

The Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) were a leading source of 2025 ammunition order intake. Critically for battlepolicy's frame, Ukraine is now the single most important customer country for Rheinmetall's Weapon & Ammunition division — a direct line from the order book to the front line. Foreign sales are 62% of the total, so this is not solely a German story.

Competitive position Pro

Among primes, Rheinmetall competes and partners at once. In land systems it rivals Franco-German KNDS (Leopard/Leclerc, PzH 2000) — with which it also collaborates — plus BAE Systems (CV90, artillery) and Italy's Leonardo. In ammunition it has out-scaled peers, claiming to produce more artillery shells than all US sources combined after acquiring Spain's Expal and building plants across Europe.

Against this directory's startup cohort — the Andurils, Helsings and Ukrainian drone makers — Rheinmetall is the opposite archetype: slower-moving and hardware-heavy, but with the mass production, certification and NATO relationships startups lack. Tellingly, the primes are co-opting the newcomers: Rheinmetall itself has paired with Anduril (loitering munitions) and Lockheed Martin (air-defense missiles), and forms joint ventures with Ukrainian industry. Its edge is scale and trust; its risk is speed and drone-era agility.

Battlefield relevance Pro

The battlefield story runs straight through Rheinmetall's shell lines. Artillery is the defining scarcity of the Ukraine war, and Rheinmetall has lifted 155mm output from roughly 70,000 rounds a year in 2022 toward about 1.1 million, targeting ~1.5 million network-wide from 2027. Its new Unterlüss plant in Lower Saxony — opened September 2025, ~€500m, Europe's largest — will scale to 350,000 shells a year by 2027, with early rounds already earmarked for Ukraine.

On the ground, its ammunition, Leopard 2 and Marder vehicles, Skynex guns and the Gepard family are in active front-line use, and Ukraine is its top ammunition customer. The company runs an operational Kyiv joint venture repairing vehicles and building Lynx IFVs, and has announced — but not yet opened — a 155mm plant inside Ukraine, with production targeted for 2026.

Analyst verdict Pro

⌖ Analyst note · editorial draft — not yet re-verified

Rheinmetall belongs in this directory as the incumbent yardstick: the company that already does at industrial scale what the startup cohort only promises. When investors, generals or founders invoke 'Europe rearming,' Rheinmetall is the concrete referent — the backlog, the plants, the shells actually leaving the line — and thus the benchmark for whether newer entrants can turn battlefield relevance into durable production and contracts. The risks are equally instructive.

Its ~45% drawdown from the 2025 peak, triggered by the F126 frigate cancellation, shows how exposed even the anchor is to political budget swings and program cuts, not order-book size. Longer term it faces the drone-era question: cheap, attritable, software-defined systems reward speed over the mass and certification that are Rheinmetall's moat — which is why it is buying into the startup world (Anduril, Lockheed, Ukrainian JVs) rather than assuming the moat holds.
