The Stridsvagn 122 is Sweden's Leopard 2-derived main battle tank, with reinforced armor and Swedish command systems, operated by Sweden and Ukraine.

Overview

The Stridsvagn 122, usually abbreviated Strv 122, is a Swedish main battle tank developed from the Leopard 2 Improved configuration that also underlies Germany's Leopard 2A5. Its Swedish specification combines additional armor with revised command, control and fire-control equipment. The designation identifies it as Sweden's second tank type armed with a 12 cm gun, following the Leopard 2A4-based Strv 121, according to Wikipedia's system history.

Sweden acquired 120 Strv 122 tanks, with production divided between German and Swedish manufacturers. The type entered service in 1997. Its distinguishing features include additional turret-roof protection, thicker crew hatches and French GALIX smoke dispensers, as described by Kyiv Post and Wikipedia.

Sweden transferred ten tanks to Ukraine, with receipt publicly confirmed in September 2023 by the Swedish military, according to The Kyiv Independent. Their service with Ukraine's 21st Mechanized Brigade provides a combat record for the Swedish configuration.

In Sweden, the remaining fleet is entering a further modernization cycle. Janes reported that the first Strv 122 upgraded to Strv 123A was received in June 2026. That program changes the gun, protection and digital systems while retaining the existing tank fleet as its foundation.
