Ukraine’s Jet-Drone Defense Faces a 3,000-a-Month Production Race

The first Geran-5 kills show that Ukrainian interceptors can catch Russia’s fastest attack drones. The next six months turn on factories, financing and a Patriot stopgap.

Two Sept. 19 Geran-5 kills

Two interceptions published on Sept. 19 show that Ukraine has a working counter to Russia’s jet-powered Gerans. The Rubin crew of the 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment used a new interceptor to destroy a Geran-5, and Wild Hornets said the weapon was its STING S. The company published video of the engagement.

President Volodymyr Zelensky posted separate Security Service of Ukraine footage that day showing an unnamed delta-wing interceptor, launched from a rail, destroying a jet-powered Shahed. LIGA.net identified the target as a Geran-5, but the SBU did not specify the variant. The two videos turned successful combat use into public evidence.

Wild Hornets claims STING S has destroyed around a dozen Geran-4s and several Geran-5s during combat trials, mostly through its Hornet Vision Ctrl remote-control technology. The company plans mass production after the trials, but has withheld specifications and says the final configuration may change. The engineering answer works. Output and money now set the limit, and Russia’s factories are ahead.

The 60% interception problem

Ukraine destroys only about 60% of jet-powered drones, versus more than 90% of earlier propeller-driven models, air force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said. Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi counted 2,100 jet-powered attack drones and 136 missiles launched in the first three weeks of September, killing 288 people. Russia launched more than 2,800 such drones in August.

HUR describes the Geran-5 as a weapon closer to Iran’s Karrar than to the Shahed family. It is about 6 meters long, spans as much as 5.5 meters and carries a 90-kilogram warhead. A Chinese Telefly TF-TJ2000A turbojet producing 200 kgf of thrust drives it at a reported 450-600 km/h, to roughly 6 kilometers in altitude and about 1,000 kilometers in range.

A mobile air-defense operator near Kyiv with the call sign Racoon said older Shaheds flew at 1-1.5 kilometers, where his crew could engage them. Jet drones fly at four, five and even seven kilometers. “It’s not realistic for us to down them,” he said. Crews that once had minutes now get seconds.
